"But they have to stop looting"?
I actually question whether the police are responding to looting, or are the people flipping the table as a result of police.
Check out these numbers:
in 2012 the *total* sum of all robberies and thefts according to the FBI was $440m
As a society we spend $72 BILLION on police and $74 BILLION on prisons each year.
So we spend $150 Billion a year vs $0.5B of blue color property crime.
Now, I am not being fair, certainly the cops are catching rapists right? Well, no actually only 3% of rapists are convicted. Okay, so if the criminal justice system is not catching rapists - how about murderers?
Just 50% of state and 7% of federal prisoners were convicted of any violent crimes. Let's make a broad assumption that ALL violent criminals are 1st degree murderers. Okay then 50% of that $150 BILLION is going against murders (roughly), that leaves $75 BILLION to prosecute the $0.5B of property crime.
In review:
We taxpayers bailed out the bankers in 2009 to the tune of 6 trillion dollars added to the national debt to pay for the most massive looting in US history
Every year we pay $150 Billion on law enforcement of which $75B is for non-violent crimes.
Blue color criminals rob for just $440m a year
All these big numbers are confusing.
Let's make it simple:
Every time your local home invasion guy breaks into your home and steals a $20 bill. The local, state and federal police and prison systems charge you $3,000 in taxes to handle this $20 crime.
Meanwhile, while that guy swiped $20 from your kitchen table, the bankers in 2009 charged the society credit card to the tune of $12,000 dollars.
$20 : $3,000 : $12,000
