Consuls — Terms of Service

Effective September 6, 2026

Consuls is private software written and operated by Erik Bethke for his own use. These terms exist because Google requires a terms-of-service link for applications that request access to Gmail data. They are short because the application has one user.

What this is

A personal tool that reads the operator's own mailboxes with read-only permission and presents a ranked triage list. It is not a product, not a service, and not available for anyone else to use. There is no sign-up, no account system, and no fee.

Acceptable use

The application may only be used by its operator against accounts he owns or is explicitly authorized to read. It must not be used to access another person's mail without their informed consent.

No warranty

The software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. It may misclassify messages, miss messages, or stop working without notice. It is not a system of record and must not be relied on as one — authoritative mail lives in the underlying mail provider.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the author is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from the use of, or inability to use, this software — including missed or misclassified messages.

Availability and changes

The application runs on a single personal computer and may be modified, suspended, or discontinued at any time without notice. These terms may change; the effective date above will be updated when they do.

Privacy

Data handling is described in the privacy policy.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
