How about this? To honor the 2nd amendment rogue government idealism - you can keep assault rifles and big clips and such. BUT(!) You need to find another 5 to 10 non family members who are all of good standing, clean records, mentally stable etc. The group buys militia insurance and places a bond as the form of premium. Something like $50,000 to $100,000 for the group. Any infraction of the gun laws and the group forfeits the bond and cannot reapply for 5 years.
All of you become equally responsible for whatever the weapon does. Someone in the group forgets to lock up the gun and the teenage son shoots someone in school? Then the whole lot of 10 people go to prison for 25 years+ for murder.
I bet your neighbors would suddenly be really interested in how well you keep your guns. Maybe even a secret militia weapons cache with biometric locks. Maybe even a 24/7 guard! Fantastic, I am cool with that.
I am tired of the slippery slope argument. I want to hear from gun owners what gun control they want in place to help prevent senseless gun homicides.
What would be the right laws? The current set of wide-open lax laws are not working.
I want:
Training & exams on transportation, cleaning, storage, and actual use in combat.
Higher age limits, we have alcohol at 21. Guns should be 25+.
Get a proactive clear bill of mental health and criminal background.
Must purchase a gun from a registered gun dealer. No person to person sales - ever. New business can act like escrow companies like we do for houses.
Start people off with hunting guns: rifles and shotguns with small ammo.
After they have reached 30, they can apply for a pistol license, 6 rounds of ammo.
After they have reach 35 and no issues, they can apply for a militia permit as I started in this post above.
Something like this would be vastly better than me driving to a swapmeet and just loading up my trunk with whatever.
Along with passing this law give everyone 90 days to get fully permitted: mental health, exams, etc. After 90 days offer a $10,000 bounty for anyone who tips off an owner of an illegal weapon. Criminals would turn on each other in a heartbeat.
Something like this I want. I am sure it is flawed. I am not a gun owner, and would be very happy for my responsible friends who own guns articulate a better plan.
