Some white friends of mine are tired of reading about unarmed black teenagers being killed by cops. Wow. I am tired of people not caring about police killing citizens at higher and higher rates despite the overall crime rates being way down.
I am tired of cops killing, raping and beating citizens and less than 1% are prosecuted let alone found convicted. There are a lot of things to be tired of. But being tired of reading stories that fail to spark any empathy from you? That is asking for too much.
How about living with having your child killed by a cop and there will be no trial, no investigation, and that the killer's testimony is the primary evidence.
Even if Wilson's killing of Mike Brown is legal under our laws. The fact that the same police department controlled the crime scene for 6 hours. Then my local prosecutor who is running for governor controls the grand jury process and cannot get an indictment for a trial, despite that for for normal citizens a prosecutor can get an indictment well over 98% of the time, but cops are indicted in grand juries at 0.2% rates?
When we pride ourselves on freedoms and the bill of rights, shouldn't we expect and demand EVEN greater scrutiny when the state kills one of us? Shouldn't we demand an even higher standard? But instead it is practically true that any cop in the USA can kill anyone - white or black and *all* they need to say is that in their judgment they felt threatened. And they can not only escape an indictment, but they do not get a trial, and they do not even lose pay or vacation time. It is simply OKAY to kill us.
Then on top of that we have racism. Two issues, police oversight and racism. These are important issues and we should be active citizens that watch the videos, we should be engaged, we should demand police body cameras, we should have a trial for every police shooting. We should protest and push until we have a clean police that engenders trust in the great majority of citizens of all colors. All the great police that risk their lives for us every day deserve to have our confidence and support.
