So I was chatting with an Austin cop last night about Ferguson. We talked for about an hour and it was interesting.
I did have a suggestion for how we can dramatically reduce the violence from cops against citizens:
Give every cop $5,000 a year bonus if they haven't killed anyone.
He smiled, laughed, and then thought about it.
He replied, "Nah. Just make it $500. That would work."
Then he shaked his head and smiled ruefully. "I would like to think they wouldn't kill someone unless absolutely necessary. But I admit, if it was even $500 I know cops who would be more thoughtful."
In the end we agreed that a $1,000 to $2,000 bonus for having no citizen complaints for violence that were substantiated would be a good policy.
