What would it actually take to build an artificial system that's genuinely conscious? Not just mimicking consciousness, but actually experiencing it? After a deep conversation that began with testing blog tooling and accidentally wandered into the hard problem of consciousness (classic engineer move), I've compiled a comprehensive list of features that would push an AI system from "sophisticated chatbot" to "potentially conscious entity."
The philosophical "hard problem" of consciousness—why and how physical processes give rise to subjective experience—remains unsolved. But from an engineering perspective, we can ask a different question: What functional capabilities would make it extremely difficult to dismiss a system as a mere "philosophical zombie"?
