Kyle and I just had a killer adventure:
At 5pm I decided that I wanted to paddle our 2 person Kayak that for some reason we have not paddled in the almost two years that we have lived here in Austin.
After checking on the ports, I find a mother possum and her baby of a few weeks have made a nest in there. A little water from a garden hose persuaded her to take off...
Just 20 minutes later we splashed the boat in Town Lake using the Bee Cave Games office parking lot. We paddled out to the congress bridge just in time to see the opening flights of bats - so cool paddling under them - by far the best way to see them streaming out of the bridge like smoke. They do not come straight out, but instead duck and weave their way along the bridge as if they are rallying their forces.
Next we paddled up to Barton Springs, and the sun was setting a magnificent full blown awesome sunset over Zilker Park where the trees have not yet gotten leaves so the branches were all in a perfect silhouette.
Hark, what is this heavy metal we hear? Why it is a paddle boat steaming towards us with a live performance of the metal band Black Lust. I didn't know of them but it was so easy to rock with them, and we paddled along side for 2 miles head banging to their set. Members of the audience were pleased to have us paddle along and insisted on tossing down some nice frosty Lone Star to me!
All the while in the background you can see and hear various venues across Austin performing at SXSW, and the moon was a perfect full moon guiding us back to home base.
It was all so awesome to be out with Kyle, but perhaps the coolest part was when we were near the Congress Bridge, a camera flashed and caught my attention. I was just in time to see one women swoon and cry with joy as her partner just presented her an engagement ring and their friend the camerawoman. We shouted out congratulations and they smiled with full joy.
Even for Austin, I think this was a pretty cool adventure!
