He didn't even kill her...
It is hard to keep track of all the amazing outcomes from Eric Casebolt's dangerously unhinged assault on an African American teenaged girl armed with a yellow bikini.
#1 – The officer himself “resigned” 4 days after assaulting an unarmed teenage girl using very excessive force with no clear event to provoke any response. 4 days. That alone is an incredible outcome. If that was all that happened it would be a night and day forward progress of reigning in the out of control racist and criminally dangerous cops that lurk on our police departments.
#2 – The white male resident that was freaked out that there were too many AA kids at “his” pool delivered a number of highly racists remarks (e.g. section 8 housing) and then call 911. He said the cops absolutely had to use force to reign in these out of control teenagers that responded to an invitation to go swimming. Remember, this guy said these teenagers were out of control. When this asshole was 18 years old, he and two buddies broke into their rival high school and went into the agriculture center and killed all the baby turkeys by pulling them apart. Not satisfied they went on to stab and carve up the pigs and cows. This proton-serial murderer then spent almost a year in prison despite signaling to society he is a psychopathic violent offender.
#3 – The white woman that threw the first blow against one of the teenage girls, after also using racial slurs has been put on administrative leave from Bank of America pending an investigation. This is the one person in the whole affair that should have been arrested and charged with assault on a minor. The women who started the party w/o a permit should have simply been ticketed with a fine.
#4 – And then of course FLORIDA MAN had to have an opinion. This time it was a high school principle who said: “He did nothing wrong,” Iber wrote in a comment that showed his Facebook picture, name, school and title. “He was afraid for his life. I commend him for his actions.” By doing so he violated his own school districts community standards and policies on social media us. He was insta-fired.
So check it out: white racist people who assaulted, or otherwise abused African American children all had immediate consequences. 3 out of 4 were fired, and the animal killing monster is now outed nationally.
Why? Because of a mobile phone video, and social media to research and expose these assholes.
Now many people are online commenting and cautioning about the dangers of society abandoning due process and resorting to the chaos of social media justice. Or they complain what about freedom of speech? I call bullshit on both of these whines:
1) Freedom of Speech != Freedom from Consequences. Angry, afraid, white conservatives are always complaining that they should have the freedom to be racist, sexist or any other form of bigot and that we should all just accept them as they are. Religious Freedom, Amerika, or whatever their bullshit. And the whole time that they want this freedom from consequences, they applaud the cop for pulling the girl's hair and slamming her to the ground, why? Because, they think she probably gave him some uppity lip. Uppity lip from a black girl. Freedom of Consequences, indeed. Eric Casebolt is not in a Federal Prison despite assaulting an unarmed girl and aiming a loaded weapon at two unarmed teenaged boys. He should be in prison for that, but he is not in prison for any speech.
2) Oh no! We will all be judged by what we say online! Not fair! Out of context! Boo-hoo. Now that the world is getting smaller and we are connected again, the consequences of running your mouth or otherwise being an asshole are now real again. Our legal and criminal justice systems are so broken down that we accept that the police can kill 1500 of us a year and it is okay. Cops can simply say “I was afraid for my life.” and they can kill anyone. But things are beginning to change. People are no longer patient when they see videos of what actually happened. They no longer have to place their trust in government agencies. They can see for themselves what happened and people do know right from wrong.
Social media and mobile phones are the new 4th estate that will keep in check the abuse of power from local, state and federal police. Beyond checking the police, mobile video exposed Mitt Romney's disdain for the 47%, it is revealing corporate pollution in rivers and streams, it is catching lobbyists and politicians making illegal back-room deals. And finally of course we have Snowden and Wikileaks that are delivering perhaps the biggest 4th estate contributions to fill a large gap in our society.
When I think back 10 years ago – 2005, I cannot recall too many significant citizen reporting even though I followed a few crowdsourced news sites. But imagine 10 years into the future? All of the police will have body cameras uploading the the cloud continuously, and all citizens will likely be recording all their interactions with police, imagine when a lobbyist and a politician have to assume everything they say privately and publicly has a good chance to be exposed. Will some good people be harmed when something happens without quite the full context? Perhaps, but look how resilient Charlie Sheen or Sarah Palin have been from suffering from what they have said.
We have a lot of cleaning up to do. For too long there has been a monopoly on power, and freedom from consequences. Now we are all being recorded and we will be judged swiftly.
Update: AND BOOM! And number 5! Another racist teacher has been fired over this!
