Why should Bernie supporters keep pushing? Why not give up now?
The stronger the Bernie supporters push. And frankly the louder that they claim they will stay home on election day and not vote for HRC. The more the Democratic party at-large will push HRC's platform to the left. Look at Nancy Pelosi all of the sudden no longer supporting the super delegate system! (Truly shocking!)
There is not a doubt in my mind that if HRC gets the nomination, that many Bernie supporters (most under 50) will feel disappointed, and we will see much lower turnout for 2016. If the GOP had a reasonable candidate like a Jeb Bush or Mitt Romney they would win. However, HRC is lucky that the GOP is melting down and all they have is scary clowns. She will still likely win vs Drumpf. *BUT* The Democrats are on track to lose house and senate seats, due to lowered turn-out. (2008 brought in a majority in the house and senate by drafting off of the Obama energy.)
Now 2016, we are likely to see stronger GOP majorities in house and senate, *and* no popular mandate with HRC squeaking past Drumpf early in her first term when all presidents make hay. Absolutely *nothing* will happen. e.g. the recess appointed supreme court justic Obama appoints after the election will have to leave and HRC will be stuck with the Supreme Court with 8 justices. The GOP will do whatever they can to tank the economy with HRC at the helm and further stoke the flames of fear and hate. They saw how much damage was caused to their party when W Bush was at the helm when the economy melted down. Cynically, I do not believe the GOP actually wants to ever win the POTUS seat again and is content with obstructionism.
Meantime U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders will not run again in 2020, and it will be hard to get people's energy, unless U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren runs. But she wouldn't challenge sitting HRC. So at 2020, HRC having presided over a recession would likely lose to any random GOP asshole claiming she blew up the economy (unfair).
But then 2024? Warren would be 74, probably healthy enough to go for the run for POTUS. She should be able to roll in with a lot of enthusiasm, and benefit from the 2020 census changing a good chunk of the gerrymandering.
