I remember as young as in first grade being annoyed that my school made me pledge allegiance. How could a country founded on the concept of maximizing individual freedoms and the smallest state demand the religious reverence to a flag?
Then, as I grow older and learn more and more about our horrific history of the most brutal acts of exploitation I am gobsmacked trying to think what it could be like to be a minority - to be a black American. I really do not understand, nor will I ever.
When I look at the miserable 20-30% of Americans that are actively racist I have no productive thoughts. Then I think of the other ~50% that say they are not into politics, or just wish we could enjoy football without drama, and then I start to despair. And, again I am not black, nor latino, or any other minority group. I do not know how all these people who have had such absolute savagery impacted upon them are so amazingly peaceful!? Bending the knee is just the latest in the longest running campaign of nonviolent engagement that I hope will one day work.
But looking through history there are countless cases where the abused lost their patience and tables were flipped.
I think white people should be extremely grateful for the bent knee. Yes, white people should be grateful for yet another nonviolent warning protest.
