My journey home from Cebu took an unexpected but magical detour through Anchorage, Alaska. As a first-time visitor, I couldn't have picked a better time to experience the Last Frontier's famous midnight sun.
There's something surreal about starting a hike when most people are heading to bed. But in Anchorage during the summer solstice, the sun had other plans. At midnight, the sky was still painted in brilliant twilight hues, creating an otherworldly atmosphere for exploration.
The temperature was perfect for hiking - cool but not cold, with a gentle breeze carrying the scent of wild flowers and pine. The extended daylight meant wildlife was still active, offering chances to spot local fauna in their natural habitat.
This unusual timing offered some unique advantages:
The way the low-hanging sun painted the landscape was unlike anything I'd seen before. Shadows stretched long across the terrain, creating dramatic contrasts and highlighting features that might be missed in regular daylight.
What better way to conclude my Asian adventure than with this completely different yet equally magical experience? Alaska's midnight sun hiking has definitely earned a spot on my "must return" list.
Sometimes the best adventures are the unplanned ones that push us out of our normal routines!
