Bethke’s Take on Squishy Words

A few days ago, I found myself at the Austin Explorer’s Club, chatting with a Rabbi of all people, and guess what? I laid out my vision of the Hyperdimensional Universe (HDU) and how everything is essentially a form of search—and he nodded along like we were old colleagues. He’d been thinking in similar terms for years. That moment reminded me that these ideas aren’t just tech talk or game dev theory; they resonate with philosophers, spiritual leaders, and everyday thinkers who sense that reality is a rich, layered tapestry.

I’ve been circling around this big idea—something I call the “Squishy Worlds” framework. Here’s a working summary:

Hyperdimensional Universe (HDU)

  • Definition: The HDU is a total landscape of all possible states—real, potential, historical, fictional, digital. Past, present, future, and even the purely imaginary all coexist as different coordinates in a vast conceptual space.
  • Implication: We’re not imposing meaning on a static world; we’re explorers navigating dynamic terrain. The Rabbi at the Explorer’s Club embraced this easily, seeing it as a natural extension of his own interpretive and spiritual practice.
  • Definition: When we create art, we’re not pulling brilliance out of thin air; we’re searching through the HDU guided by intuition and experience, sifting through infinite patterns until we find something that moves us.
  • Implication: Creativity becomes less about conjuring something new and more about skillfully discovering resonant pathways in a conceptual ocean.

Intelligence

  • Definition: Intelligence is the ability to model the HDU and know which tools to use in which contexts. It’s not just about having a vast library of facts, but the knack for applying the right strategies—heuristics, intuition, computations—to navigate complexity.
  • Implication: Think of intelligence as a versatile toolkit for exploring and understanding. The Rabbi related this to scripture interpretation, where centuries of tradition act as a map, but personal insight chooses which path to follow.

Consciousness

  • Definition: Consciousness is the capacity to hold a model of your present state, imagine a desired future state, and then “pathfind” toward that future. It’s an active, forward-looking process, not just awareness.
  • Implication: To be conscious is to be a traveler with a compass and a destination in mind, continually checking the terrain and adjusting course.

Squishy Worlds

  • Definition: In these “Squishy Worlds,” boundaries aren’t fixed. The HDU doesn’t come with predefined labels: real, unreal, physical, digital, sacred, profane. Instead, we carry multiple maps and switch between them depending on context.
  • Implication: Accepting squishiness means acknowledging that a conversation in Austin with a Rabbi can hold just as much conceptual weight as a cutting-edge AI debate, or a painting that emerges from a late-night intuition. Each is a dimension in the HDU worth exploring.

Next Steps:
This is a draft, a set of personal foundations I intend to refine. I’ll keep testing these ideas in different arenas—AI research labs, art studios, philosophical salons, and yes, even conversations with rabbis and explorers. As I go, I’ll add stories, examples, and perhaps new concepts that emerge from these squishy worlds.

The takeaway? This framework isn’t locked down or final. It’s more like a mental travel guide, something we can keep updating as we discover new terrains of thought, meaning, and possibility.
