So here at GoPets we work against a weekly patch schedule. That means every week we ship some new features, bug fixes and items. In general we do it local time Wednesday morning. From time to time issues hold us back to the evening or to Thursday. Every once in a while we face the dreaded Friday Patch. If we have a Friday Patch we know the weekend will suck with a high chance of a required hotfix.
We do weekly because I think it helps us deliver a steady stream of content and new features to the citizens of GoPets and see what the results are fairly quickly. We are still learning how to do this process and every week it is frustrating to learn of some breakdown of communication that led to some bug or error or simple confusion.
So I read the Zen of Designblog regularly - I appreciate Damion's editorial style and he rarely posts something that I do not find interesting and often it is valuable to me. I especially like it when he posts about raiding. I am avid PvPer on WoW and recently bought a WoW account just for the purpose of having a tool auxillary druid and/or paladin just so we can do some basic 5-mans to get primal nethers and such. I am not big on raiding because I find it so difficult to gather the required people together to go do a dungeon or a raid. But PvP is pure game-time & pleasure for me. Anyways, I am rambling. So I like to read Damions' posts on Raiding since he has an active raiding group and I can get some ideas from him through his blog.
Recently he posted about Elitist Jerks as the blog that he reads for end-game raiding info, so I went to check it out. What struck me immediately in the forums is the thread for the undocumented features of the current 2.3 patch for WoW's Burning Crusade Expansion.
This post will bore game designers as I decided to translate some of the jargon from that thread, but it may be interesting to others how incredibly deep the fan base will dig into your game and will know as a group your game mechanics better and faster than the development team can really hope to know. Also it is a post to my guys to show how much stuff slips through their patch procedures despite the fact that WoW patches do not ship against a hard schedule but instead ship "when they are ready". So with all the time and money that anyone could ask for - it is still impossible to test everything and clean everything and still common stupid stuff happens. But on the bright side most of these undocumented features are just that - new stuff that Blizzard did not take the time to even write up for their patch notes:
**The reduction of the chance for mace spec to proc wasn't mentioned in the notes. (Not sure if it made it to Live, or if it was hotfixed.)
<Translation> Mace Spec:** Characters that specialize in the mace weapon in their talent tree (and I do not even know if they are talking about just rogues here, I haven't played warriors or other melee classes besides rogue so I do not know if others have a mace spec)
<Translation> to proc: Chance for a certain effect to be triggered.
***Is BoSac 1min as it says in the patchnotes or is it 30sec like it was on the PTR?* > <****Translation****> BoSac: ** I have no clue which ability or spell they are referring to here. I am guessing on the Sacrifice of something - here I can be a decent level 70 pvp player and there are tons of acronyms and jargon that I do not know > > **<****Translation****> 1min / or is it 30secs:** they are referring to the cooldown of the ability which itself is jargon for the minimum time between use of that ability > > **<****Translation****> PTR**: Public Test Realms, where changes may go to be tested before being applied to live and are available to the public for review *** Of note -- the Daze mechanic change is not listed in the patch notes posted by Nethaera in the General Forums sticky. Of course, based on historical lessons taught by Blizzard revision control, it needs to be verified on the live servers. * <Translation> Daze mechanic: **A number of abilities and effects in the game share the same game mechanic spell catagory: Daze that temporarily renders your avatar unable to perform combat actions. ***Windfury animation got changed to this weird black cone. I don't like it. Here's a vid: [YouTube - New Windfury](http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y_G-JEUDvJk)* <****Translation****> **a new animation was created for an ability already in the game just to make it better for the users, but here the change is not appreciated and videos are rapidly posted to YouTube**If this affects the items you purchase as well, this is going to be really frustrating when I'm trying to gem stuff up after raids. I need to have 3 Stars of Elune in my bank at all times if I don't want to wait, I guess? It's only the money. Apparently gold sellers have been distributing gold by having the buyer list an auction for the amount of gold they want to buy.
The Escape from Skettis escort quest now rewards 9g, 10s.
<Translation**> An end-game quest that level 70 characters may repeat once a day to earn their in-game living now pays slightly less
*** Nexus Transformation: This recipe to transform a Nexus Crystal into a Small Prismatic Shard has been added to some Enchanting trainers. Blizzard neglected to mention that this has a 48 hour cooldown.*
<Translation**> A notably very long cooldown is applied to a new recipe that allows the users to change their Nexus Crystals into Small Prismatic Shards has been introduced to the Enchantment craft to balance out guilds that probably accumulated way too many Nexus crystals than they can use.**Well, I know it's not really undocumented, but I'm easily getting 10-20+ more FPS than I was pre-patch on my Mac. There had been a few Mac changes, but most of them had been pretty unimportant. This really is a glaring difference.
* * I also saw a HUGE improvement in performance and I was surprized that Blizzard did not take the time out to note that!* * > *Druids Rejoice!* > > * You can herb in flight form again!* > > * Allthough, it seems to be tweaked a little, you get a "you are flying" msg if you hover to high but you dont have to land really to do it, so not sure the exact limitations.* <<b>Translation**> Druids can now pick up herbs off the ground without taking a few seconds to change their avatar from a bird to a humanoid and back to a bird again.
Anyways there are dozens and dozens more to geek out at there <div
