Edwardo del Rio is an internationally renowned cartoonist and caricaturist his home is in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He has won a number of awards for his work with images.

MARX for Beginners is an illustrated book with a combination of original cartoons by Rius and wickedly speech-ballooned classic etchings mixed in with short passages of text.

Only 143 pages long, it is over all-too quickly. Rius does an amazing job summarizing nearly all of western philosophy starting with the Greeks and ending with Lennin’s application of Marxism in Russia.

If you are looking for a solid digest version of some of Marx’s crunchy and chewy writings, Rius should be your very first stop. Rius excellently sets up the context for Marx’s work and also humanizes Marx with quite a few peeks into the personal life of Marx. As a bridge to more serious works Rius, thoughtfully adds 10 pages of meaty words of Marxism and finally caps it off with two more pages of suggested reading to get a grip on Marx.

I immensely enjoyed the book, and even if your are a die-hard conservative capitalist I am sure you will enjoy the charm and spirit of the book in addition to the elegant summarization of western philosophy.

Rating 9 (only because I wanted more!)
